East Side Neighborhood Development Company History
Formed in 1978, ESNDC is a root Twin Cities neighborhood nonprofit community development corporation. Its 35 year history has produced hundreds of community development professionals and leaders. Here are some ESNDC milestones.
  • 1983:
  • ESNDC completes its first development project, the 8 unit Railroad Island Townhomes.
  • 1984:
  • ESNDC launches a commercial development program for local small businesses - one of the first in the area.
  • 1990:
  • The “Houses to Homes” program begins rehabbing and selling vacant homes.
  • 1991:
  • ESNDC completes Bradley Terrace, a 30 unit housing cooperative.
  • 1993:
  • The Phalen Corridor Initiative is launched with ESNDC in a lead role.
  • 1995:
  • The 10 unit York Village Cooperative is completed.
  • 1999:
  • ESNDC purchases the Old Swedish Bank building on Case and Payne.
  • 2000:
  • ESNDC purchases and rehabs the historic 1897 G.A. Johnson Building developing a new storefront and 8 residential apartment units.
  • 2003:
  • The East Side Family Center finds a home as a program of ESNDC.
  • 2005:
  • The Phalen Boulevard roadway is completed creating jobs and improved access to the neighborhood. The Bruce F. Vento Nature Sanctuary opens, transforming this part of the Mississippi River floodplain from a blighted industrial area to a beautiful community asset. This was a period of collaboration and comprehensive community development, at the core of which was ESNDC.
  • 2007:
  • ESNDC and its partner the Neighborhood Development Center complete an award winning renovation the Old Swedish Bank building.
  • 2010:
  • ESNDC hosts a visit from Jimmy Carter as part of ESNDC's ongoing partnership with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.
  • 2011:
  • ESNDC's Building Incentive Fund cuts energy usage in half for ten commercial buildings on Arcade and Payne. ESNDC and the Twin Cities Housing Development Corporation complete financing to rehab 49 housing units and build two new townhomes.
  • 2012:
  • ESNDC achieves the vision of 15 years of Mainstreet revitalization programming on Payne Avenue with bookened major redevelopments. ESNDC also launches the East Side Neighborhood Development Company Real Estate Brokerage.
